A Saundersfoot resident will be taking on the village’s triathlon challenge this weekend in his yellow wellies to raise money for Tenby RNLI’s lifeboat station!
Will Horton, a marine engineer by trade, will be competing in the Saundersfoot Triathlon tomorrow (Saturday) for a worthwhile cause that he can identify with, being on the sea himself so often.
“Because I am always so active on or around the sea, I feel it is only natural to donate to the RNLI, as if I was to ever need any assistance they would be the first people to come to my aid, no matter what the weather or conditions,” he explained.
“I work as a commercial skipper over the summer months, so I know how quickly the sea state can change.
“Personally, I have been in some very adverse conditions, so I have the greatest respect for the sea.
“I have recently returned from a yacht delivery, sailing for 11 days from Lawrenny to Benalmádena. The trip was a big eye-opener because we lost all power halfway across the Bay of Biscay and had to navigate the old school way for 30 hours, day and night!” continued Will, who said that he really enjoyed competing in the event last year.
“Last year, I completed the triathlon swim in a borrowed wetsuit, then completed the bike on an old ’70s Raleigh road bike with the gear shifters on the frame, and then the run wearing my five-year-old running shoes!
“This year, I have bought a second-hand wetsuit needing an easy repair, a new ’70s Raleigh road bike, and I’ll also be doing the bike ride and run in yellow wellies and a sou’wester to spice things up a bit!
“I work in yellow wellies anyway, so no need to splash out on new running shoes!” laughed Will, who will also be wearing an RNLI Lifeboat branded top to show his support.
“I didn’t train last year and finished it well within the cut-off time. I’m not training this year also to make it more of a challenge
“I set out to raise £250 and I’m already halfway there, but I would love to raise £350 for such a worthwhile cause,” he added.
