A local resident has voiced concerns over heavy lorries and vehicles speeding down the A478 along the route of one Pembrokeshire’s top visitor attractions Folly Farm.
Stephen Scanlon of Begelly told the Observer that it would be disasterous if a fatality occurred in that location before the local authorities acted on the matter.
“Once upon a time - Pembrokeshire Council decided to build a by-pass, which was a great idea, but the trouble is a lot of heavy lorries are not using it, they are instead using the A478, past Folly Farm, and not only are they using this road instead of the by-pass, they are speeding down it along with a great deal of other vehicles!” Mr. Scanlon said.
“This road was never intended to take this volume of heavy traffic. Huge lorries are barrelling down at a terrific speed, even though it is supposed to be 30mph in Begelly.
“At one time an island with keep left bollards, was put outside the Crossroads Garage, which stopped heavy traffic, but since the new houses were built, this island has been drastically reduced in size to just bollards, defeating the object.
“Will someone have to die, or be severely injured, by this speeding traffic.
“What seems to be rather ludicrous is that Pembrokeshire’s main tourist attraction Folly Farm has traffic speeding past it’s premises - I say ludicrous because not only do people visit and park their cars at Folly Farm, there are also those that walk up from caravan parks with their children and also some in prams.
“One day a speeding vehicle could skid and crush people, and that day could be sooner rather than later, as local people are already hearing the screeching of brakes,” he continued.
A?spokesperson for Dyfed Powys Police stated that they would forward the concerns to the ‘Go Safe’ team who run the speed camera vans across the area.
Mr. Scanlon also hit out at the county council over the recent ‘dust storms’ in the area that affected residents caused by road resurfacing work.
“If the Council knew prior to the road being laid, that this stone created excessive dust, why did they not take the precaution of warning residents, and also treating this surface, to avoid the appalling amount of dust that was generated?” he remarked.
“Bet the Councillors will not have this surface laid around their homes.
“It is disgusting the way the people of Narberth and Begelly have had to put up with this noxious dust.
“Yes it has now abated, but not completely cured, especially when heavy duty lorries come barrelling down the road,” he added.
