After training hard since late May, 12 teams of rowing novices are now set to race against each other in longboats on the Cleddau.
The 2009 Novice Challenge organised by the Welsh Sea Rowing Association takes place tomorrow (Saturday).
Characterised by sheer raw effort, fancy dress costumes, over excited coxes and numerous accidental collisions, the race is understandably popular with spectators.
Tenby Sea Rowers, based at Surflink, have a keen team of novices in the event.
Kate, Ed, Liz and Hugh, have been in serious training with their coach, Mike Ashbridge.
From never having previously rowed, they have been rowing regularly off North and South Beaches and endlessly practising turns around any unsuspecting buoy they can find.
In true football manager style, Mike commented: "On the day, the guys have a fantastic chance and I'm confident they will finish in the top 12. Rather than tempt fate, we've decided against taking either Blisters or Oarsome and will be rowing our favourite longboat, Summer Spectacular!"
The event is held at Black Tar on the Cleddau where a bar and BBQ are available from 1 pm to help spectators ease into the necessary mood to watch the race.
The race itself starts at 3 pm, so if you want a fun afternoon watching the antics on the river or just want to find out more about longboat rowing, why not go on along.
