Pembrokeshire County Council could be in ‘hot water’ after one of Tenby’s busiest toilets was left closed over a busy sunny period in the resort.
Addressing the matter at Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, Clr. Mike Evans asked the county council’s head of environment and civil contingencies, Richard Brown, who is also now the authority’s liaison link officer for the resort, as to why the public conveniences on Castle Beach had been closed that day.
“They were again locked today on another sunny day in Tenby,” commented Clr. Evans.
With it now costing 20p to ‘spend a penny’, Clr. Evans said that one toilet next to the busy Castle Beach and harbour area, was probably making the most money in the county, so he also questioned why there was no hot water supply for the facility’s showers.
“All the money that PCC are receiving from the toilets now, surely we can receive some hot water in the shower there,” he continued.
Mr. Brown said that the authority were still spending more money on public toilet facilities in Tenby than anywhere else in Pembrokeshire.
“In general, the beach cleaning, the gardeners, the toilets etc, we do spend more money in Tenby than anywhere else, which is not wrong as it is a key tourism town for the county,” he remarked.
Clr. Paul Rapi pointed out that as the business rates in the town were higher than anywhere else, this should be the case.
“The resources spent are comparable in terms of what Tenby means to the economy of Pembrokeshire. If you have the jewel in the crown, then you don’t stop polishing it,” added the Mayor, Clr. Laurence Blackhall.
