Sir,

I have not written to you before, but I do so now to express my extreme disappointment with Tenby’s decorations this Christmas. My wife and I have been coming to Tenby since 1965, including winter visits since 2000, and lived on the harbour since 2012. We often visit the Torch Theatre in Milford Haven and went to eat beforehand last week in their harbour area. It puts our harbour to shame with tasteful coloured fairy lights all round the perimeter. No lights at all in our harbour, which is normally far prettier and much photographed as an icon of Wales, even on BBC weather TV and recently a feature programme on ITV television!

Then, driving around Milford town, their Christmas lights make Tenby look forgotten! Cascading white lights like water falls from buildings, lots more street light banners and several lovely Christmas trees. Tenby has a few street banners in the High Street/Tudor Square and a pathetic tree in front of St. Mary’s Church with just a few lights, not even a fairy on top! Even Saundersfoot puts us to shame! Why can’t we have a well decorated tree at the junction of Croft and Norton where the Tenby in Bloom display greets everyone to the Northern town, but not in Winter! And why not another on the corner of the town walls to greet the Southern arrivals?

Even the Mayor, whom I know quite well, was embarrassed when I mentioned these thoughts! Is this another example of Pembrokeshire County Council putting Tenby down the priority list? Come on Tenby Town Council, Rotary, Round Table or Lions? Get your acts together!

I am president of Tenby Probus Club next year which has only a very small membership these days. Are you all going to leave it to us to raise the appeal for Tenby to be better decorated next Christmas?

Meanwhile, well done to Tenby House Hotel for their display and the marvellous New Year firework display. At least one business is putting on a show to do some justice to Tenby’s status in Wales!

Best wishes to all for 2017.

Alan Brooks,

Tenby.
