Sir,
A little quiz for your readers. Whose words are these?
-"Still on the ceiling!"
-"I'm absolutely delighted. I really am."
-"I really feel we've achieved something. It shows that even when you've got an obdurate group of politicians, democracy can be pushed through."
-"I'm delighted that common sense has prevailed, but if they had looked at it in a common sense way, consulted properly and gone through the proper procedures it would have never have come to this."
-"The decision (.....) was not made on behalf of the people, but on behalf of ways of getting funds to do certain things, with no thought given to the impact on people."
-"When I think what they were wanting to do, the word that comes to mind is 'obscene', especially when there were other, more suitable places. A tremendous amount of people would have been affected. It was so obvious it wasn't the place to do it. I can't understand how anybody in the authority could even have contemplated it."
Answer - These are the words of the man who spearheaded a successful campaign against the siting of a recycling facility at Johnston in 2003. Clr. Ken Rowlands!
On winning that campaign, he said all the above and "The whole point of policy is to improve the lot of the people that you're governing." ('governing' and not serving?!)
So Clr. Rowlands, do the following words sound familiar?...When I think of what you and your council are planning to do, the word that comes to mind is 'obscene', especially when there are (if the council really looked) other, more suitable places in the area.
A tremendous amount of (vunerable) people will be affected. It is so obvious that this isn't the place to do it. I can't understand how anybody in the authority can even contemplate it!
Let us hope that the council really is trying to improve the lot of the people it is serving, and that the owners and residents of the Brooklands Home, their neighbours and all the people in the wider community, who are working hard to get the new civic amenities moved to a more appropriate site, will be able to use all the above words and more when democracy prevails and this 'obscene' plan is rejected.

FOOTNOTE: A spokesperson for Pembrokeshire County Council said this week that the main element of the development planned for Johnston was a Materials Recycling Facility, which would have been accessible to council vehicles. The development planned for outside New Hedges was a completely diferent facility for use by the general public.
