Tenby UTD 2nd XV 11 pts Whitland WANDERERS 14 Whitland extended their hold on the Pembrokeshire Junior Union Cup to six years on Tuesday after a hard fought, but deserved win against a Tenby side who were intent on spoiling the party. The final was played at the ground of Pembroke Dock Quins, but was far from a classic, as referee Marc James, who controlled the game well, was forced to issue three yellow cards to Tenby players for various infringements. Despite all the penalties awarded to Whitland, Ross Michael left his kicking boots at home, missing six penalty attempts and a conversion in front of the posts, which he would normally have slotted to put Whitland out of sight. Nevertheless, this set up a tense final quarter, with both sets of supporters biting their nails, but justice prevailed and Whitland's captain Anthony James lifted the cup. The first half saw a kicking duel between Tenby's outside-half Neil Powling and Whitland fullback Ross Michael, each being successful with two, while Powling missed one and Michael missed three and hit the post with two others. Whitland's first came after 11 minutes following a high tackle. Powling put Tenby level after 15 minutes, but midway through the half their number eight Justin Richards was yellow-carded for coming in at the side and Michael restored Whitland's advantage. Not to be outdone, Powling brought the sides level again on the half-hour to leave the halftime score six points each. The second half saw Whitland try to put pace on the ball, but Tenby attempted to slow it down and the penalties kept coming, with Michael failing with attempts after 12 minutes and 27 minutes, but being successful with one in between. In the 30th minute, Tenby's second row Nicky Allen was yellow-carded for coming in at the side. Whitland elected to take a scrum some five metres from the line, only for referee Marc James to award another penalty after Tenby collapsed it. When scrum-half Owain Davies tried to take a quick tap, he was held back by Tenby captain Neil Duffy and the referee had no alternative but to award a penalty try and also yellow card Duffy. Michael put the conversion wide. Now down to 13 players, Tenby at last began to play some good rugby and were rewarded when after a great drive by the forwards centre Simon Rossiter forced his way over the line for a try, which Powling failed to convert. This set up a grandstand finale, but it was Whitland who kept their line intact and lifted the cup.
