Whitland travelled away last Saturday to face the students of UWIC in division one of the National League, and came away with a convincing win by 39 points to 21. Whitland's overall strength in all facets of the game proved the undoing of the students.

UWIC took an early lead when centre Gareth Morgan was successful with a fifth minute penalty. They extended their lead in the 12th minute when winger Gareth Bartlett went over in the corner for the students' first try, which was unconverted.

Whitland opened their account after 18 minutes with a try by centre Mike Buckingham, after good work by fellow centre Lee Glanville and number eight Randall Williams. Outside-half Aled Davies added the conversion.

In the 21st minute, UWIC's captain and outside-half Nathan Hopkins added a further three points with a drop goal.

Whitland took the lead in the 32nd minute after centre Mike Buckingham bulldozed his way through the students' defence, to send Lee Glanville in for the Borderers second try.

Again Davies added the conversion, and went on to also slot two penalties to leave the half-time score 20 points to 11 in Whitland's favour.

The students started the second half at a frantic pace, and after 48 minutes wing Simon Fletcher chipped the Whitland defence and re-gathered to score an unconverted try in the corner.

Six minutes later, Whitland extended their lead with a try by second row Fakatah Molitika, after a rolling maul was set up from a lineout on UWIC's 22 metre line. This went unconverted.

In the 64th minute, again after good driving play, the Whitland forwards set up quick ball for scrum-half Gareth Davies to send Mike Buckingham over for his second try, which was converted by Davies.

UWIC struck back three minutes later with an unconverted try by centre Neil Davies.

Whitland's final score came in the 77th minute after a long touch-finder from halfway after an indiscretion by a UWIC back row forward resulted in a penalty. At the lineout, there was a good take by Molitika and the forwards rumbled on towards the try line, where front row forward Gareth Williams crashed over for the try.

Replacement outside-half Scott Penny added the extra two points to give Whitland victory by 39 points to 21.

It was a good all round performance Borderers, whose power in the scrums and the loose was too much for the youngsters of UWIC.

Tomorrow (Saturday), Whitland are home to Beddau, with a 2.30 pm kick-off.
