Whitland 27 pts. Loughor 31

Whitland welcomed Loughor on their first visit to Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn on Saturday. And it was a visit they will remember, for they took their chances to claim their first away victory and leave the Borderers languishing fourth from bottom of Asda League Division One West. After some missed chances in the first 10 minutes, Loughor opened the scoring when fullback Peter Smiriglia kicked a penalty. And they extended their lead after 19 minutes when winger Scott O'Kelly went over for an unconverted try after turnover ball. Some four minutes later, Loughor increased their lead yet again, when right wing Rory Saunders crossed for a try and Peter Smiriglia added the two points. He also added a penalty four minutes later to put Loughor 18 points up. Whitland opened their account on the half-hour with an Aled Davies penalty. Just before half-time, after a good run by winger Will Davies, Loughor could only clear to touch. From the resulting lineout, Whitland drove infield, where the ball was released to outside-half Davies, who made a half break before giving a short pass to centre Colin Jones to touch down. Again Davies was successful with the conversion, to leave the half-time score 18 points to 10 to Loughor. Loughor extended their lead eight minutes into the second half, when centre Simon Pardoe burst through the defence to touch down, with Smiriglia adding the conversion. Two minutes later, Aled Davies kicked a penalty for Whitland, and shortly after, Smiriglia replied with another for the visitors. Whitland then mounted a comeback, with man-of- the-match Aled Davies making a break 10 metres into the opposition half and breaking through two tackles to touch down for a fine individual try; he also added the extra two points. With 15 minutes remaining, replacement winger Dion Thomas picked the ball up on halfway and, after leaving his counterpart for dead, he cut back inside before drawing the fullback and passing to the replacement flanker Gareth Downs, who crossed for a try. Again outside-half Davies added the two points to cut the deficit to just a point. With the five minutes left, Smiriglia kicked another penalty for the visitors. After that, Whitland continued to press hard, but failed to cross the line, leaving Loughor with the three points and celebrating their first away victory of the season.
