Pedigree Sheep Sale
The Annual Show and Sale on behalf of the Charollais Sheep Society at Whitland Mart (judged by Mr. Lionel Organ) sold to a choosey trade with a top price of 400 gns for a yearling from J. V. Price, Hollythorn, Upland Arms, Carmarthen. Prizewinners were: Yearling rams - 1. J. V. Price, Hollythorn, Upland Arms, Carmarthen; 2. Davies & Brookin, Tyllwyd, Dryslwyn, Carmarthen; 3. P. A. & J. Thomas, Bryngwyn, Whitland. Average: 293 gns. Ram lambs - 1. D. L. Davies, Ffordd Uchaf, Llansteffan, Carmarthen; 2. S. Tucker, The Beeches, Horton, Gower, Swansea; 3. P. A. & J. Thomas. Other yearling rams sold 300 and 290 gns from Lionel Organ, 300 and 250 gns (twice) from P. A. and J. Thomas and 260 gns from J. V. Price, Ram Lambs sold to 340 gns from D. L. Davies; 340 gns from Thomas, Cildywyll; 320 and 300 gns from P. A. and J. Thomas; 290 and 250 gns from Davies, Glanbrydan; 270 gns from J. L. Davies and 260 gns from S. Tucker. At the recent fortnightly sheep sale at Whitland Mart, an entry of 620 breeding ewes sold to a top price of £78 from J. James, Tycannol, Derwydd Road, and averaged £47. Other leading prices included £77 also from J. James, Tycannol; £71 (twice) from Lewis, Newton Farm, Rhoscrowther; £70 from James, Telyrfa, Llanybydder - also £68 and £65; £70 from Rofe & Morris, Blaensarngoch, Llanboidy; £66 from Richards, Upper Burnetts Hill, Martletwy, and £65 from Williams, Ynys Deullyn, St. Nicholas. Some 100 commercial rams on offer included a top price of 330 gns from Reed, Upper Scolton, Spittal - also 230 gns and 220 gns (twice); 305 gns from Williams, Ty Isaf, Llanwnda and 270 gns from Evans, Delfryn, Cynwyl Elfed - also 235 gns; Ewe lambs numbered 140, peaking at £40 from Davies, Troedyrhiw Fach, Blaencelyn, and averaging £38.48 Weekly Mart
A total entry of 51 saw bull calves selling to a top price of £140 for a Limousin from Thompson, Ysguborwen, Login, whilst heifers peaked at £86 for a Simmental from Morris, Blaenffynhonnau, Llangynin. Other leading prices were: bull calves - £137 (Charolais) from A. A. Tremellen, Tremoilet Farm, Pendine; £112 (Belgian Blue) from Wilson, Coombe Farm, Red Roses; heifer calves - £86 (Simmental) from Morris, Blaenffynhonnau; £70 (Simmental) from Thomas, Cresswell, Laugharne; £60 (Limousin) from A. A. Tremellen. There were some 750 entries in total for the sheep section, with 445 approved lambs selling to a top price of 107p/kg for 28.5 kilo lambs from Jameson, Cilhir Isaf, Meidrim, with the overall average at just under 100p. Top price per head was £48.60 for 46.50 kilo lambs from Roberts, Llwyndrissi Farm, Whitland. Other leading prices included 106p for 30 kilos lambs from Jones, Clyngwynne Farm, Llanboidy; 104.5p for 46.5 kilos from Roberts, Llwyndrissi Farm, Whitland, and 103p for 35.5 kilos from Mathias, Shipping Hill Farm, Manorbier. Some 256 cull ewes sold to a maximum of £55 and averaged £39.80, lighter ewes sold to £30 and averaged £18. Cull rams sold to £36 and averaged £27.50.
