Twenty-eight members of Whitland Male Choir and their wives travelled to Devon to give a concert in St. Paul's Church, Honiton (writes Trevor Williams, PRO).
The choir stayed in the historic hotel, The Royal Glen, where Queen Victoria was very nearly killed, and where many of her children and grandchildren stayed. The hotel was filled with many antiques and memorabilia of a bygone age.
We started off on Saturday on a Midway coach driven by Paul, a most helpful and cheerful person. A halfway break for lunch was made at the famous Harry Ramsden restaurant at Cribbs Causeway, Bristol, then on to our destination, The Royal Glen in Sidmouth, to spend a very convivial evening together.
On Sunday, the choir had a trip down to Torquay and Torbay, where the sun shone brilliantly all day, the group arriving back relaxed and ready to give the concert in Honiton, and what a successful concert.
The choir and soloists, Hefina Jones, Les Evans, Ian Evans, Brynmor Thomas and the up-and-coming young tenor Peter Totterdale, were in wonderful voice that night, with such a variety of music.
The musical director, Juliet Rossiter, who prepared the concert in her very capable style, excelled in the wonderful setting of this old church.
Hefina Wyn Jones, accompanist, also gave a solo, which was a delightful surprise to the choristers.
The audience were full of praise for the choir and soloists, hoping we will make a speedy return to Honiton to entertain them.
After refreshments, the chairman of the choir thanked our hosts for inviting our choir to Honiton.
On returning to the hotel, the evening was given over to celebrating a successful trip.
We returned to Cribbs Causeway, Bristol, so that the ladies could do some shopping on the way home.
Gentlemen of Whitland and district, look what you're missing, come and join the choir, we have many similar trips planned for the future. Just come to one of our practices on Thursday at 7.30 pm to see how easy it is to be part of this happy group.
You will not be tested in front of the choir. Juliet will just listen to your voice to put you in the right section of the choir.
Please ring me if you would like to talk about what is involved in joining the choir (01834 861556).
