Whitland went to the top of Division One of the National League on Saturday after securing three points against the Bulls of Builth Wells. The 3-0 scoreline might suggest that this was a dull game, but how wrong you would be. Everyone at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn was entertained to a superb high class game of hard rugby, played between two good sides, and refereed superbly by Simon Harris. The game was played in atrocious conditions, but both sides tried to play open rugby. The game had everything, superb work by both packs, attacking flair by both sets of backs and two superb defences. In the end, Whitland deserved the points and with Aled Davies kicking the winning penalty 10 minutes into the second half, the victory secured the double over Builth Wells. Whitland's pack grafted hard all afternoon and unsung hero Gareth Williams, the ever-present Aperammo Tauialo, second row Iwan Davies and man-of-the-match number eight Randall Williams were always very much to the fore. Again the backs' defensive line was superb and what ever Builth threw at them, they withstood the onslaught. In the second half, outside-half Aled Davies controlled the game and kept Builth pinned back in their own half. Tomorrow (Saturday), Whitland play Pontypridd at home in the fourth round of the Konica Minolta Welsh Cup, with a 2.30 pm kick-off.
