Newbridge 16 pts. Whitland 3

Whitland travelled to play Newbridge last Saturday, and came away from the Welfare Ground with no points after going down by 16 points to three. The first half started promisingly for Whitland, with wing Dion Thomas going close after five minutes. But against the run of play, Newbridge took the lead through a penalty by outside-half Greg Callow, after a needless penalty given away by second row Carwyn Davies. Whitland levelled the score after 12 minutes with a penalty by outside-half Aled Davies, after scrum- half Andrew Jenkins was taken out after kicking the ball through. Whitland had the better of the set phases, but failed to capitalise on their advantage. Callow attempted two drop goals for Newbridge, but failed with both, to leave the half-time score at three-points all. Newbridge took the lead eight minutes into the half with a well-taken try by centre Alan Jenkins, but Whitland's first-time tackles were letting them down. Callow added the conversion. Whitland were then hit by injuries amongst the forwards, with prop Gareth Williams, flanker Simon James and captain and number eight Randall Williams all having to leave the field. This meant the pack had to be re-jigged, resulting in Newbridge taking a stranglehold on the game. And with Callow kicking two further penalties, the home side eventually ran out victors. Whitland fielded: Will Davies (Eifion Roberts), Dion Thomas, Lee Glanville, Gary Evans, Jack Tremlett, Aled Davies, Andrew Jenkins, Gareth Williams (Alun Davies), Aled Harris (Jason Evans), Andrew Morella, Raff Williams, Carwyn Davies, Celt Thomas, Simon James (Ricky Rosser), Randall Williams, capt. (Phil Morgan). This week Whitland take on Caerphilly at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn, with a 2.30 pm kick-off.
