Local school children have given their thumbs up to the recycling centre in Whitland being saved.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s Executive Board announced this week that it has withdrawn proposals to close Whitland Household Waste Recycling Centre following a comprehensive budget consultation.

Following a review after the county council had asked for public feedback on several suggestions as it looked at ways to save £16.5million over the next three years, the Executive Board made the decision on Monday to withdraw the suggested closure of the recycling centre.

“The children of Ysgol Llys Hywel came to see to the recycle centre in February and were able to look into the skips and see the types of things that are recycled,” said county councillor for Whitland Clr. Sue Allen. “It is a very clean facility and easy to reach the skips.”

The visit followed a debate the children had in school about the budget proposal to consider the closure of the facility

“A letter was sent to the Chief Executive of Carmarthenshire County Council to tell her about their discussions and contained useful advice for the council.

“It was a lovely sunny day when they visited and so the children also helped to fill the bottle bank. Everyone is delighted with the outcome and the decision of the Executive Board,” added Clr. Allen.
