It was a very busy weekend for members of Whitland Bowling Club. Last Friday, in weather that could be described as an early summer's day - even though it was only April - we kicked off the new season with the official 'opening of the green'.
Chairman, Peter Wills started the proceedings by welcoming the Mayor of Whitland, Mrs. Madeline Phillips, Colin Wynn, who this year has the honour of being Pembrokeshire Bowling Association president, and the officers and members who turned up to see for themselves how wonderful the green is looking. It was wonderful to see so many members attending, and hopefully this support will continue throughout the season.
After the Mayor delivered the traditional first wood, a limited ends game was organised by club captain, Steven Reese. It didn't take long before the laughter echoed around the rinks, with nominations for the first toucher and first wood in the ditch being put forward.
But it was a unanimous decision that the award for the first wrong bias of the 2003 season was to go to John Rees (sorry John).
The afternoon was rounded off with a splendid buffet tea provided by the ladies committee.
WHITLAND 124
KIDWELLY 127
The next day, Whitland hosted the gentlemen of Kidwelly Bowling Club for a pre-season friendly, and the score reflected just that. Unfortunately, the weather didn't produce the glorious playing conditions of the previous day, but it's only to be expected so early in the season. Once again the ladies provided a wonderful post-match buffet.
CARDIGAN 107
WHITLAND 119
Easter Monday, Whitland travelled across the border to Cardigan. This fixture has produced some excellent matches in the past, and this one proved no exception.
Only 12 points separated the two teams at the end of the day in Whitland's favour.
All but one rink escaped the unpredictable Bank Holiday weather and managed to complete 21 ends without getting the 'wets' out.
This time, it was the ladies of Cardigan who provided a delicious after-match buffet.
COMPETITIONS
Players are reminded that the match and competition sheets are up, so please make every effort to pop into the club and put your names down.
