OVER 50s 90

UNDER 50s 109

One of the highlights of the club season is the annual match between the youngsters and the 'Wrinklies' as they are irreverently called.

This season's game proved to be exciting, with much banter, imaginative suggestions and illuminating comments on the various shots made.

Much to the delight of the Under 50s they succeeded in reversing last year's resounding defeat with a close fought victory. Little did they realise that it was psychological play by the Over 50s - two consecutive defeats would have disillusioned them towards their ability!

The rink results were even three each, however, it was captain Glyndwr Thomas's rink of Rebecca Thomas, David Jenner and Ben Thomas who won by 24 points to nine over Elizabeth Pratt, Roy Croft, Bell Allan and Eric George that made the shot difference.

Andrea Thomas, Timothy 'Tiglets' Thomas, Sam Holloway and young Ryan Thomas had a four-shot win over Peter Wills' wife Josie, John Rees and Neil Tucker - 'Tiglets' had the nerve to apologise after obtaining an outrageous wick to save five shots with a large grin on his face and a "Well played Dad" from son Ryan.

Colin 'he who walks on water' Wynn, David Jenner, Selwyn Evans and Marc Jones managed a nine-shot win over the phlegmatic Des Jefferies, Derrick Jones, Bronwen Llewellyn and Rod Richards.

It was Richard Court's rink that led the fight back for the 'Wrinklies', a seven-shot win over Simon Tucker - 'his hair must have got in his eyes' - was well deserved. Mike Williams, Jo Shewry and Malcolm Holding were all in good form, and Simon, Liam Price, Paul Wynn and the promising Steve Aston had no answer to their expertise on this occasion.

Trevor Williams, one of the club choristers, was on 'song' taking the scalp of Chris Court by four shots. Aeron Thomas, Denny Richards and the improving John Llewellyn all played well against Ashley Reese, Cally Jones and Wally Price.

County singles champion Steve Reese found the canny Scotsman Jim Morrison in good form and was beaten by one shot. Jim is too old a stayer to be put off by Steve's good natured banter and brimming confidence, and together with Brian Griffiths, Dianne Scourfield and Brian Whitfield deserved the narrow victory.

It was an excellent evening despite the inclement weather, which failed to dampen the spirits of all players and did much to bolster club spirit and moral.

Tomorrow (Saturday) the club play their final league game against Pembroke Dock at Whitland.

WERNDDU CUP COMPETITION

Twenty-eight players contested this annual August Bank Holiday competition expertly organised by secretary Steve Reese.

The format adopted is a round robin of four teams in each section, each game played with two woods over five ends.

There were many surprising results with senior players having a difficult task to reach the knockout stages. In ideal weather conditions the standard of play was of a high quality.

The eight quarter-finalists were Max Jones, Elizabeth Pratt, Susan Evans, Steve Reese, Peter Wills, Roy Croft, Chris Court and Dianne Scourfield, with Steve Reese, Peter Wills, Elizabeth Pratt and Chris Court reaching the semi-finals.

Steve defeated Peter to reach the final and Elizabeth had an excellent win over Chris.

In the final, Steve's stamina and all-round ability was a little too much for Elizabeth who played very well, leaving Steve to go on to gain his fourth Wernddu success - well done Elizabeth and Steve.

WHITLAND LADIES 38

FISHGUARD 18

Despite having to play three on each rink due to holiday commitments, Whitland ladies had an excellent win at Fishguard in a league encounter.

Jo Shewry, who had an outstanding game at lead, Susan Evans and Elizabeth Pratt were all in superb form winning by 20 shots over A. Gray and her rink.

Cally Jones, Josie Wills and Dianne Scourfield all played well to draw 11 shots all against G. Macfarlane always a difficult opponent to play against.

This was a most pleasing result for the ladies especially away from home.

WHITLAND LADIES 32

SAUNDERSFOOT 43

Whitland ladies put up a good show against Saundersfoot on their excellent fast green. Despite an 11-shot defeat the ladies all played well with Val Whiteford's rink of Andrea Thomas, Hannah Thomas and Jo Shewry gaining an excellent result, 18 shots to 14 over Mary Cumming's rink.

However, the tables were well and truly reversed on the other rink with Elizabeth Pratt, Dianne Scourfield, Kathy Jenner and Josie Wills losing by 29 shots to 14 - Kathy Jenner played particularly well - to the experienced Thelma Mearns who was well supported up front by the entertaining character Elsie Pendlebury who kept the front end highly amused with her tales of the antics of her 'budgie', much appreciated by both teams.

WHITLAND LADIES 28

HAVERFORDWEST 48

This league game played at Whitland was a continuation of the gale-interrupted match played in July. Both Whitland rinks lost to a good Haverfordwest team.

Dianne Scourfield, Cally Jones, Josie Wills and skip Elizabeth Pratt lost by six shots to Marcel Manning, a good comeback over the last two ends by the Whitland rink made the score more respectable, on the 18th end they were trailing by 12 shots.

Susan Evans, Jo Shewry, Andrea Thomas and Val Whiteford found Ann Thomas and her rink in excellent form losing by 14 shots, 26 to 12.

The ladies have two league games remaining this season which has been quite successful to date.
