WHITLAND 95
FIVE ARCHES, TENBY 81
The whole Whitland team showed determination throughout and thoroughly deserved their win.
Peter Wills' rink of the laconic Des Jeffries, amiable Scot Jim Morrison and the enthusiastic and precise lead Nigel Davies immediately seized the initiative against the Sam McNeilly quartet. They hit top form to lead 18 shots to 2 at the tea interval. However, the traditional beverage injected some energy into the Tenby boys who came back well to within nine shots - but never seriously threatened to win the rink finally losing by 25-18.
Steve Reese, the county singles champion, once again demonstrated his undoubted skill in skipping his rink of Mathew James, Marlais Powell - making a welcome return to the team - and Mike Williams to a convincing win by 27 shots to 17 against R. Powling. It was a game of two halves; in the first 12 ends the Whitland boys scored 25 shots against eight, but fortunes changed in the latter stages, with Five Arches scoring nine shots to Whitland's two - which again raises the question: What was in the tea!
Captain Glyndwr Thomas led his rink of Aeron Thomas, Malcolm Holding and the 'tonsorially elegant' Simon Tucker to a good win by 25 shots to 19 against K. Hubbard. Reversing the position of the front two Aeron and Malcolm paid dividends; both played very well.
Mr. 'Awesome' Wynn, Denny Richards, John Rees and the laid back lead David Davies - known to his friends as 'Dai Davs' - fought back well after the 15th end, when they were 16 shots down, to reduce the deficit to nine shots at the 21st end, 18-27, against Mike Crockford, who was well supported by that well known sportsman Ray Holly.
A commendable trait of the Whitland team this season is their determination to be competitive at all times, never making it easy for their opponents to score. The 12 league points gained were very welcome.
WHITLAND 92
PENDINE 56
Whitland gained a much needed 12 points in this home league fixture against local rivals Pendine last Thursday evening.
Leading the way was 'the Awesome Wynn' who, despite being a little under the weather, skipped his rink of Denny Richards, John Rees, and David Davies to a resounding win over the A. Edwards quartet - the front end played exceptionally well! The score 37-9.
Steve Reese continued in impressive form and together with Richard Court, Mike Williams and Mathew James were too strong in all departments for R. James and his rink, winning impressively 26-8.
Peter Wills' rink of Nigel Davies, James Morrison and Chris Court were trailing by eight shots after 11 ends, but showed great determination to win by one shot, 19-18, on the last end against R. Goswold.
Glyndwr Thomas, Simon Tucker, Aeron Thomas and Malcolm Holding found the experienced Jim Lloyd and his rink in top form and never recovered after dropping a five on the 10th end and eventually lost by 21-10.
The 12 league points were very welcome and consolidated Whitland's mid-table league position.
On Sunday afternoon, Whitland play a friendly against Ammanford Town starting at 2.30 pm. All welcome.
WHITLAND LADIES 38
PENDINE LADIES 38
An honourable draw was the result of this Ladies League encounter at Whitland last Thursday evening, with each team winning on one rink.
Pendine's successful quartet, skipped by J. Simpson, won an entertaining game by 25 shots to 10 against Whitland's Josie Wills, Bronwen Llewellyn, Dianne Scourfield and Val Whiteford.
However, the Whitland rink of Elizabeth Pratt, Andrea Thomas, Cally Jones and Jo Shewrey won comfortably over the Carol Jones quartet by 28 shots to 13.
Congratulations to the Whitland rink of Josie Wills, Elizabeth Pratt, Sue Evans and Dianne Scourfield who reached the final of the prestigious ladies competition, the 'Margaret Bryant', at Milford Haven. After beating Milford Haven in a close semi-final, they lost a very competitive final to the experienced Pembroke Dock rink skipped by Jean Harries. Well done ladies.
A grateful thank you to all members who so willingly took responsibility for delivering meals-on-wheels in Whitland over the last four weeks.
