WHITLAND 3 pts

FIVE ARCHES TENBY 11

Prior to this match (sponsored by D. B. Builders, Whitland) Whitland were favourites to secure the major share of the league points, however, a spirited Five Arches performance turned the form book on its head. The visitors won on two rinks, drew on one and lost narrowly on the fourth, so securing the overall six points.

Glyndwr Thomas's rink of Malcolm Holding, Aeron Thomas and Simon Tucker found it hard going against the Mike Crockford quartet. Indeed, they did well to limit the score to 24-8 after being down 26 to three on the 15th end. Skip Mike Crockford had a particularly fine game, solving the intricacies of the green with ease.

The in-form Steve Reese, together with Mathew James, Mel Tucker and Mike Williams, lost by five shots to Roy Powling and his team. However, this game was in the balance until the 19th end.

Colin Wynn, David Davies, John Rees and Denny Richards fought back in commendable fashion to draw their game against the Keith Hubbard rink. From 15 shots to eight down on the 15th end, they led 18-15 on the 19th, but dropped three shots on the final two ends; they gained a welcome point through sheer determination.

It was left to Pete Wills's rink of the meticulous Nigel Davies, Jim Morrison and Des Jeffries to gain Whitland's only win.

Few shots separated the rinks throughout the game, but a four on the 18th end put the home team in front and they eventually won by three, 18 to 15. This was an excellent team effort, with all players making a marked contribution; this rink is now proving to be very competitive.

WHITLAND LADIES 34

FIVE ARCHES LADIES 35

The Whitland Ladies outshone their men counterparts, but on this occasion they lost by a single shot against the formidable Five Arches team.

Kathy Jenner, Bronwen Llewellyn, Josie Wills and Deanne Scourfield were all in good form and won by four shots (19-15) over V. Williams's rink, while Wendy Court, Jo Shewry, Cally Jones and Andrea Thomas gave a good account of themselves before losing 15-20 to C. Morgan and her ladies.

The ladies have been very competitive this season and on a number of occasions have lost by very narrow margins. However, they hold a healthy position in the league, which is most pleasing.
