Sir,
I was born in the Tenby Cottage Hospital in December 1942, and went to school at St. Stephen's School, followed by East End School in Pembroke when we moved there. Good schools both!
In those days, if we sang the Welsh National Anthem, it was always in English, and I never learnt any Welsh, although my mother's aunt and uncle, from north Pembs., spoke Welsh at home.
I really do not know the anthem completely in Welsh, and do not understand any word of it, except for 'Gwlad'. So last night at the end of the Remembrance service at church here in Cardiff, when a large congregation sang, seemingly in Welsh, I happily and proudly sang in English!
But I cannot remember the words of a line near the end.
Came home and looked on the web, being rewarded with a selection of very poetic stanzas, none of which matched mine. (Before I quote my version, may I comment that I adore Tenby, love Pembrokeshire and am proud to be Welsh!)
This is how I remember our anthem:
O land of my Fathers
the land of the free,
the home of the telyn
so soothing to me!
Thy noble defenders
were gallant and brave.
For freedom, their
hearts, lives, they gave!
Wales! Wales!
Home sweet home
is in Wales!
..........................??
My love shall last -
my longing, my yearning
for Wales!
I am hoping that you or a reader will be able to give me that missing line.
Jane Colley,
CF24 3PF.
