5 … 4 … 3 … 2 … 1 … We have lift off! The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge is Space Chase, and we are launching now. If you’re not familiar with the Summer Reading Challenge, it is open to all children aged up to 12. Simply sign up at the library and get a starter pack, then take out two or more books. Any books, factual or fiction, any subject. Visit the library twice more, taking out at least two books each time, and each time get a sticker and some other goodie. There are certificates and medals for everyone who completes the challenge, and it lasts all summer, so there’s plenty of time to complete it.
There will also be a series of children’s events and activities during the summer holiday, just pick up a leaflet at the library. These will be free, but booking will be essential, as places are limited.
During the summer holidays Baby Rhyme time will not be on; the last one will be on Tuesday, July 16, before coming back in September.
New books in this month include novels by Dilly Court, Victoria Hislop and James Patterson. New non-fiction includes The Fast 800 Recipe Book, Simple Happy Parenting, Around the World in 80 Novels and the Rough Guide to Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. We have a number of new audiobooks in this month, including Firefly Summer by Maeve Binchy, Without Fail by Lee Child, Murder Mile by Lynda LaPlante and In A House of Lies by Ian Rankin. There is a charge for borrowing audiobooks, £2 or £1.35, but they are loaned for three weeks.
The Gateway to Computing sessions will still run during the summer in Tenby, but not in Saundersfoot. In Tenby, our Digital Champion Volunteer Roger has a drop-in session every Monday morning 10-12, just bring your gadget along and ask your question. There’s no need to book and it’s free. If you have a more in-depth question for him, there are two bookable periods, one at 12-12.30 pm and the other at 12.30-1 pm. Our other Digital Champion Volunteer Simon, who ran the sessions in Saundersfoot, is taking a short break from volunteering over the summer; he will miss the sessions but he is hopeful that he will be available again in the autumn.
Library members with smartphones, tablets (not Kindle) or computer access can also borrow a wide range of e-books and e-audiobooks and read e-magazines completely for free through the libraries page of the council website www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk/using-library-services/247-e-library.
Orange recycling bags and food waste bags are available in the library; just ask at the counter. However, we do not hold any of the recycling boxes; they are at Tenby Leisure Centre and at the De Valance Pavilion.
The parking enforcement officers are still patrolling the library car-park and may issue tickets to those who abuse the parking system. There are warning notices up around the car-park. We have a number of short-stay bays immediately outside the library which can be used for up to 30 minutes (60 minutes with a Blue Badge) without a parking permit. These are clearly marked with 30-minute or 60-minute signs. Parking anywhere else in the car park requires a permit which can be obtained from staff.
For more information and booking, please call Tenby Library on 01437 775151 or 01834 843934 or email [email protected].
