Sir,

I wonder if it has occurred to the detractors that Narberth already has two supermarkets, right in the middle of the High Street where they bring the town to a halt with each and every delivery.

What is all this talk of Spar and Costcutter being somehow champions of the local small guy? Nonsense! Spar is the biggest food retailer in the world (look it up on Wikipedia) and dwarfs the Co-op which hopes to develop the Spring Gardens site. Costcutter is similarly no kind of a local shop. Both Spar and Costcutter put their share of those out of business when they came to Narberth themselves.

Apart from welcome improvements in the traffic situation and the quality of fresh produce available, the Co-op would provide proper jobs rather than the casual positions currently available. It would not threaten any business other than Spar and Costcutter, who could always try raising their game. The 'food miles' position would remain about the same.

What's not to like?

Mr. Terry Wilson,

Narberth.
