Sir, My husband and I own a hotel in Llandudno. It's called the Oasis. You may have seen us on Wales Today or heard me on the radio. We committed the awful sin of painting our hotel, rather bright pink! The council will prosecute us if we don't change it. The reason I am writing to you is this. On Friday, I spoke on the Richard Evans show on BBC Wales. He only allowed one phone call from a lady who said we looked like a wedding cake! He also read a statement from Peter Caldwell from Mostyn Estates (holders of the freehold of the land). I didn't hear all of it, but in a subsequent BBC report, Mr. Caldwell is quoted as saying that there are longstanding, strict conditions for local buildings and the colours they can be; also it looks out of order, as it is a listed building and in a conservation area. He said people come to Llandudno because it's so well preserved and if that changes, folks won't come, and the hotels will be the first to suffer. The upshot is, that a couple living in Tenby heard the broadcast and rang me. They where furious. They told me how beautiful and bright Tenby was and how it was the lifeblood of the town, bringing people in because it is so pretty. I would like to ask your local residents what they think. We need all the help we can get. Most people love it and we have lots of letters of support already. This couple feel Tenby was being insulted and they have promised to write me a letter of support. You might remember recently Llandudno was referred to as 'dull and dreary' by a councillor and 'God's waiting room'. Well most hoteliers want to brighten it up and get away from this sort of approach.
Ann Blanchard,
Oasis Hotel, 4 Nevill Crescent, Llandudno
