It was truly a great performance on Saturday evening from the Welsh Sinfonia at the Torch Theatre in Milford Haven.

You could really feel the waves of Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture, which found every instrument perfectly in tune and in time with the others. Fauré's Pavane continued to delight the ears, while the piece that followed, Legend of the Lake by Welshman Gareth Glyn, teased every available tone and device out of each section of the orchestra.

The concert continued with Seagull Nebula, by Welsh Sinfonia Composer in Residence Michael Csanyi-Wills - really inspiring, conjuring the randomness and expansiveness, the dark and light of space. Beethoven's bold take on classical music concluded the experience with a lively, expressive rendition of his first Symphony.

The size of the audience was scarcely appropriate to such an accomplished 30-piece orchestra, but did at least comprise people of all ages, who listened in complete quietness, before showing their appreciation with lavish applause.

No audio system, television or rock concert can match the sonic power and beauty of a real orchestra, properly in tune, playing meaningfully in an intimate setting. Such a rare treat for this corner of West Wales, but one I sincerely hope will become more frequently available.
