Sixteen stalwarts converged on Cardigan Golf Club last Wednesday, praying that the met-office had misread their instruments. The sky was full of clouds, the wind was only half a gale and the forecast was for a fine afternoon. That turned out to be true, but, by this time, we were all safely back in the clubhouse! Six failed to finish the course and of the remainder, only one scored over 30 points.
First to head into the wind were Martin Schnozz Davies, Steve Araf Jones and Glyn Semi-Colon Jones. They all coped well with the conditions, scoring 16, 20 and 22, respectively.
Following were Mark Woody Wood, Trevor Santa Lewis and Sean Chatterbox Taylor. Woody and Santa came in with a 27 and 20, but Chatterbox fell by the wayside.
Third trio off were Darrell Romeo Jones, John Turf Williams and Rick Shamrock Lewis. Romeo and Shamrock stuck to the task, setting useful scores of 27 and 28, but the going was too tough for the Turf as he headed for the 19th from the 14th.
The final trio were Anthony Wiseguy Ryan, Steve Eleanor Rigby and Paul Goodvalue Marsdon. Both Wiseguy and Eleanor enjoyed the challenge, carding 26 and 31, while Goodvalue didn't live up to his nickname, failing to reach double figures.
Finally came the foursome of John Homer Perrott, Richard Nelson Davies, John Scribe James and Roger Analyst Handcock. From the first, Homer and Nelson were in trouble and after six holes had one point between them. At this stage they decided the prospects of a wooden spoon were very high and turned the buggy back to base for a hot shower and a hot drink.
Scribe and the Analyst continued, but by the eighth Analyst was feeling the cold, also suffering from a cold, teed-off from the 10th, then headed for the clubhouse. The Scribe caught up with the trio in front and played as far as the 14th, which was adjacent to the clubhouse - a convenient place to call it a day!
After a very pleasant meal, Woody began the ritual of prize-giving. He began by thanking Goodvalue of Wisebuys for sponsoring the prizes, also thanks to Cardigan staff for an excellent course and refreshments.
First prize went to Steve Eleanor Rigby, his 31 pts being a very good score in the conditions. In second place was the Shamrock with 28. With a better back nine, Romeo Jones took third place from Woody; this was after Romeo had been docked two points for going out of bounds through the green at the 18th.
Nearest the pin was Anthony Wiseguy Ryan, while the Shamcock took the longest drive. Over 20 handicap winner was Anthony Wiseguy - he had a good day. Glyn Semi-Colon took the OAP prize with his 22 pts.
The team trophy went to Wiseguy Eleanor and Goodvalue and the yellow ball winners were Woody, Santa and Chatterbox.
Chippy was disappointed to miss the game - he was on his way home from Tunisia!
