The Welsh Labour Government has backed towns across Pembrokeshire by funding £10,050,000 through the Local Authority since 2021 via the Transforming Towns programme, for projects such as the Western Quayside development in Haverfordwest and the South Quay development in Pembroke.
These newly released figures come after the Welsh Labour Government announced yet another £31.5 million for the Transforming Towns fund in 2024/2025 last week. Local authorities across Wales are invited to bid for this year’s money, with a further £10.8 million on offer to four local authorities across South West Wales for 2025/2026.
The Transforming Towns programme helps local authorities breathe new life back into our high streets. Since 2020, the programme has invested over £314 million in grant and loan funding to support regeneration across all 22 local authorities in Wales.
Pembrokeshire County Council has already used the funding to contribute to the Western Quayside development on the site of the former Ocky Whites department store in Haverfordwest, which will provide a restaurant and leisure space to complement the existing retail offering of Bridge Street and Riverside Quay.
Further, the council has acquired the Riverside Shopping Centre in Haverfordwest for redevelopment and the South Quay development in Pembroke, next to historic Pembroke Castle.

This is all possible because of the Transforming Towns programme.
Local Labour Senedd Member Joyce Watson MS said: “Our towns and high streets are the beating hearts of our communities. They provide good jobs, attract visitors and grow local economies, putting money back into the pockets of local people.”
Local Labour MS and First Minister Eluned Morgan added: “The £10 million already provided by the Welsh Labour Government to the council has seen key local sites refurbished and redeveloped, to ensure that our local towns are protected for future generations to enjoy.”
