Plans are in place to introduce further safety measures on a ‘treacherous’ Pembrokeshire road.

Back in the summer of 2024, Traffic lights were installed on the A477 Nash Fingerpost junction on the road between Milton and Pembroke Dock, after campaigners had long called for safety and layout changes to the dangerous ‘black spot’ at the busy junction along the A477 to A4075.

The previous year, a horrific accident at the junction resulted in the death of motorcyclist, twenty-nine-year-old Ashley Rogers of Kilgetty saw the people of Pembrokeshire and local politicians say 'enough is enough!’ with campaigners calling for urgent alterations to be made.

The Welsh Government has now stated that the proposed Order is required to introduce a 40mph speed limit on the approaches to the A477 and the A4075 trunk roads at Nash Fingerpost Junction in Pembroke, and a prohibition of U-turn manoeuvres.

A report from Welsh Ministers [as traffic authority for the relevant length of the A477 trunk road] stated: “A traffic signal controlled junction has been installed at this location, which also incorporates a combined pedestrian and cyclist crossing facility.

“The reduced speed limit is necessary to lower vehicle approach speeds and enhance safety for all road users.

“An Atkins Road Safety Review Report completed in 2020 was undertaken due to safety concerns at the junction.

“This highlighted a significant number of U-turn manoeuvres was being undertaken (largely by HGVs and larger vehicles), causing safety issues and near misses on the trunk road network.

“Therefore, an order to restrict U-turn movements was a recommendation for safety measures to be implemented.”

The Welsh Ministers have consulted with the Chief Officer of Dyfed Powys Police and given public notice of their intention to make this Order in accordance with regulations of the Secretary of State’s Traffic Orders.
