The weekly mart at Whitland on Tuesday saw a total entry in the sheep section of 1,352 - the 320 ewes together with a good entry of some 844 approved hoggetts forward meeting a typical trade averaging 93.13ppk and 241 new season lambs averaging 125.52ppk. New seasons lambs met a top price of 140.50p for a pen of 38 kilo lambs from Morgan, Myrtle Hill Farm, Cresselly, with other leading prices obtained by Windsor, Fforest Farm, Whitland; Davies, Pantybugail, Abernant; Jameson, Cilhir Isaf, Meidrim; and Evans, Coed Howell, Cwmfelin Boeth. The trade for hoggets peaked at 108.90ppk for a pen of 28 kilo hoggs from Davies, Troedrhiw Fach, Blaencelyn. Other top bids were taken for lots from Nicholas, Bramble Lodge, Stepaside; Davies, Penybont, Meidrim; Bussell, St. Kennox Farm, Llawhaden; and Morgan, Upper Bletherston, Clarbeston Road. The heavier cull ewes were at a premium meeting a very good demand and a top price of £67 from Morris, Mwche, Llanstephan. Others in the top bracket were Thomas, Cilgwyn Uchaf, Trawsmawr; Jones and Sons, Tyllwyd Mawr, Llangunnor; Thomas, Maesllyn Mawr, Tremain; and Davies, Sprinkle Farm, Llangwm - overall average £41.93. Lighter ewes are meeting a steadier trade with the majority selling from between £17 to £32 and leveling at £27.65. Cull rams sold to £48.50 from Davies, Gwardafolog, Pontsian, and averaged £33.87. Ten barren cows forward made up to £505 for a 700 kilo cow from Evans, Parc Cynog, Pendine. The average was £382.75 apiece and 64.46ppk. Twenty-three rearing calves once again met a reasonable trade selling to a top price of £185 for a Belgian Blue bull calf from Evans, Ffynnonwen, Login, who also sold a heifer calf of the same breed at £180.
