With 741 lambs forward at Whitland Mart on Tuesday, October 7, the greatest demand was again for the premium type lambs which sold to a top price per kilo of 132p per kilo for 38 kilos from John, Pantyderi Farm, Whitland.

Lambs sold to a top price per head of £58.80 for 68 kilos from Jenkins, London Derry Farm, Jeffreyston, and an improved overall average price per kilo of 120.6p. Non-approved lambs sold to a top price of £39 and to an average of £33.30.

Entries of cull ewes forward improved at 366, with the lighter ewes selling to an average of £20.31, while the heavier ewes levelled at £41.54. Ewes sold to a top price per of £50 from Phillips, Upper Portclew, Freshwater East, and similarly from Windsor, Fforest Farm, Whitland.

Cull rams sold to a top price of £35 from Scourfield, Pennybridge, Hundleton. Wethers made up to £43 from Smith, Plasparcau, Penybont.

An entry of 28 barren cows sold to an average price per kilo of 90.16p and a top price per kilo of 114p for a 625 kilo animal from Morgan, Upper Bletherston, Clarbeston Road. Top price per head included £765 for an 845 kilo Holstein Friesian from Griffiths, Lan Farm, Llanboidy.

Overage cattle made up to £920 (137ppk) for a 655 kilo Belgian Blue steer from Prout Bros, Rowston Farm, Stackpole, who also sold at £905, £900, £880, £845, £800, £760 and £710.

Twelve fat cattle forward sold to a very brisk trade with four animals realising over a £1,000, resulting in a top price per kilo of 161.50p for a 675 kilo Limousin steer from Brodie, Yerbeston Mountain, Kilgetty, which equated to the top price of £1,090. Messrs. Brodie also obtained £1,076 for a 675 kilo steer, £1,016 and another weighing 655 kilo and £1,011 and £976 - all Limousins cattle.

Heifers sold to a top price per kilo of £867 (155.50ppk) for a 520 kilo BB from Reynolds, Pentroydin, Llanddewi Velfrey.
