Tramore in County Waterford was the venue for last weekend's 10th Annual Tour for the Saturday Swingers. The party of 16 were based at O'Shea's Hotel close to the sea-front and this is an establishment which can be recommended to those wishing to visit this part of Ireland. South-east Ireland is sheltered by the Comeragh Mountains and is in the heart of an area known as the Sunshine Circuit. However, this title was difficult for the Swingers to comprehend on Friday at Dungarvan Golf Club where they experienced torrential rain all day. Very few other players actually ventured onto the fairly new but now well-established parkland course, let alone completed their rounds. Due to the awful weather, most scores were rather mediocre and the flooded greens on the back nine in particular made putting extremely difficult. Viv John, Dai Cope and Gary McNeilly all managed a very creditable 29 points. Last year's Tour Champion, Martin Morris, scored 30 points and John Stenson, who tends to keep the ball below the wind, came in with 31 points. But powerful hitter Martin Creese, who had just rejoined the Swingers, amassed an excellent total of 36 points to take a five-shot lead into the second day. Tramore Golf Club hosted the Swingers on Saturday. This is a beautiful parkland layout with tree-lined fairways and superb greens. The scoring was generally better, mainly due to dry weather. John and Viv again had top six finishes with 32 points. Alan Keating totalled 33 points and Martin Morris claimed his second third place with 34 points. However, the two best scores were by the Webbs. Neil had a fine 37 points (he always has at least one good round on tour), but he was outshone by his nephew Jonathan, who shot a magnificent 40 points, which included two 'blobs'. Martin Creese's 29 points kept him one shot ahead of Jonathan and Martin Morris going into the final day. John was a further point adrift, Neil was another shot back and Viv was one behind him. These were the only Swingers with over 60 points and realistically the winner was likely to come from within the group. Rosslare, Tenby's twinned club, was in great condition as expected on Sunday, but there was also the usual stiff breeze to contend with. Some of the overnight leaders faded out of contention fairly early in their rounds. John and Martin Morris performed very steadily and both were in the top six once again. Indeed, they were the only two Swingers to score at least 30 points on all three days. Barry Frayne and Mike Anthony came in with 33 points and they were the only two competitors to improve their scores each day. Dai Cope found his form again with 34 points, but it was that man Jonathan who was victorious for the second consecutive day, this time scoring a fabulous 36 points, despite having been cut a shot. Jonathan, who was making his first appearance on a Swingers' Tour, was therefore crowned Tour Champion. His excellent total of 100 points was amazing when considering his first round 24 points at Dungarvan. Martin Morris made a valiant effort to defend his title and finished third behind John on back 18 countback. Dai's last round won him fourth place over Viv, Neil and Martin Creese. Tony Upham was the most consistent player on tour, scoring the same on each day, but he was awarded the recently donated tour thong. The 54-hole aggregate totals were as follows: Jonathan Webb 100 points; John Stenson and Martin Morris 94; Dai Cope, Viv John, Neil Webb and Martin Creese 89; Alan Keating 88; Mike Anthony 87 (not 89); Barrie Frayne 81; Mike Wainwright 80; Richard Ormond and Garry McNeilly 77; John Bowhay 71; Phil Goodridge 68 and Tony Upham 60. Longest drive winners: Jonathan Webb and Martin Creese (twice). Nearest the Pin winners: Viv John, Richard Ormond and Mike Wainwright. Footnote: Golfers always get a great welcome in Ireland, but it was particularly warm at Tramore GC. At 11.15 am the barman told some Swingers that the bar did not open until 12 noon, but asked them if they would like a drink whilst they waited! After the golf, Arthur, the club president, greeted the party. Then, later in the evening, Tramore's double act, known as Richard and Joe, entertained the group with some wonderful songs and story- telling. It is a great shame the Swingers were unable to ably reciprocate the singing and it is intended to arrange practice sessions after golf this winter to ensure this embarrassing situation is not repeated.

Back row: Dai Cope (fourth), John Stenson (second), Jonathan Webb (champion), Martin Morris (third) and Martin Creese (winner at Dungarvan). Front: A pair of leprechauns who live locally and joined in the ‘craic’.
