Volunteers from Pembroke 21C Community Association, Lamphey Scouts and Foundry House garden volunteers rolled up their sleeves, got back to nature and gave local wildlife a helping hand in Foundry House garden.

They were successful in applying for a £100 Homebase voucher which they used to buy insect attracting trees and shrubs as part of Keep Wales Tidy's 'Have a Wild Weekend for Wales' campaign.

During the Wild Weekend, 15 volunteers planted five fruit trees and 33 perennials that will attract pollinating insects such as bees. Most of the plants are edible too so the volunteers can enjoy fruit and herbs next year.

They also created 10 insect homes from old planks and a fence post. Most of these have been placed around the garden, but some have been taken home by the children.

The children learnt new carpentry skills making these insect homes and enjoyed planting the trees and shrubs.

Gareth Jones, chair of Pembroke 21C Community Association and volunteer at the event, said: "It was great to see so many volunteers especially children get involved in this project. 'Have a Wild Weekend for Wales' has enabled us to make a huge improvement to the biodiversity of the Foundry House Garden and hopefully this will benefit the local populations of bees and other insect pollinators."
