Congratulations to The Princes Trust Cymru who have beaten more than 1,400 other entrants to scoop a top prize in this year's annual B&Q 'You Can Do It' Awards. Having demonstrated a clear vision for how winning the award would benefit their local community, The Princes Trust Cymru from Pembroke Dock have won £5,000 worth of B&Q products to make their dream a reality. Green issues are firmly in people's hearts and minds and B&Q has taken the lead in bringing energy and water saving solutions to customers in their homes and gardens. This year all entrants were encouraged to think about how their projects could reduce such consumption in their organisation The Princes Trust is a charity that helps young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, or with difficulties in their lives, to succeed. The Pembrokeshire Activity Centre is one of the largest in the UK and works with approximately 2,000 young people each year. The centre runs a variety of courses and activities, including sailing, canoeing, climbing and kayaking, and offers accommodation to its users. The B&Q 'You Can Do It' Award will be used to help renovate a derelict cottage adjacent to the Trust's centre that has not been used for 10 years. The project will provide hands-on experience of refurbishment work for 40 young people attending personal development courses that will potentially help them into employment. With the supervision of qualified tradesmen, the young people will use the award to completely refurbish the interior of the cottage to make it accessible by all. Local MP Nick Ainger was keen to show his support and joined the project and representatives from B&Q Carmarthen to help celebrate the project's success. Commenting on the £5,000 award, Steve Sutcliffe from The Princes Trust Cymru says: "We're absolutely delighted to have won a B&Q 'You Can Do It' Award. The renovations we are going to undertake will make a real difference to our facilities and we cannot wait to get started!" Helen Porter from B&Q, Carmarthen, said: "The B&Q 'You Can Do It' Awards were introduced to enable community groups to create inclusive and sustainable facilities to be proud of and to give new life to buildings and surroundings used by the local community. "We are delighted that a project in Pembroke Dock has won an award and look forward to welcoming them into our store and seeing the completed project at the end of September." The B&Q 'You Can Do It' Awards have so far benefited more than 200 community organisations. This year, 19 new projects around the UK and Ireland have each been awarded £5,000 of B&Q products and three projects have each been awarded £2,500 - bringing the total amount awarded since 1995 to more than £1.2 million.
