Tenby councillors have vowed not to let a watered down approach to the resort's floral upkeep get the better of the town. It was announced back in March, by the chair of Tenby in Bloom and Mayor of the town, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, that Pembrokeshire County Council were cutting the money spent on the gardens in the town by a half, meaning less manpower and lower maintenance to be carried out in many of them. The town council have already agreed to provide further funding where they can, and at Tuesday night's meeting they pledged that costs would be met to ensure that watering of gardens and floral aspects they were now responsible for would continue. "We all know about the cutbacks, but we can't let the standards slip, and we have to make sure that the gardens we have elected to fund planting for continue to be watered," said Clr. Mrs. Lane. "The Tenby in Bloom committee has been in talks with a couple of organisations with regard to funding, and the Ladies Circle have donated £200, but I need to ask the town council to come on board for this, as we have to water the gardens," she continued. The town clerk explained that the county council would continue to cover watering of the flower beds and gardens they were responsible for, but anything additional that the town council had agreed to take on, then watering would still be required. "Places like the Green have no water sources down there, so it is going to be easier to pay for the hours of the gardeners to continue who can still use their equipment," added Clr. Mrs. Lane. Clr. Mrs. Brown said that the town council would help in any way it could and said that the matter could be revisited once the In Bloom committee came up with costings.
