Never mind ‘remember, remember the fifth of November’ - this year it’s November 4 that residents mustn’t forget!
November 4 is the big day for waste changes in Pembrokeshire with new recycling sort bags and grey bin bags ready for use.
Residents should have already received their bags, boxes and plastic sacks along with detailed information about what can and can’t be recycled as the county council aims to meet Welsh Government’s target of 70 per cent recycling by 2025.
Pembrokeshire currently recycles 61 per cent of its waste and risks fines if targets are not met.
Collection days may change so a calendar indicating when recycling will be picked up is included in the information to be sent out.
The recycling is picked up weekly and grey bags, one per week, picked up every three weeks.
Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of Tenby town council, the town clerk Andrew Davies told members that there was a good turn out for a drop-in event held at the town’s De Valence on Monday where members of the public could learn more about Pembrokeshire County Council’s new kerbside scheme and containers.
“All that attended seemed to go away better informed on the new waste management regime coming in, having heard from the Environmental Advisers.
“We’ve had a deluge of people phoning the town council offices that don’t seem to have been able to get through to PCC, and I’m aware that a number of premises do not seem to have had their new packs delivered, but all I can say is get in touch with PCC.
“Some areas and flats will still be on the orange bag schemes, but as of Monday, black bags will not be accepted on the streets of Tenby,” he added.
Clr. Laurence Blackhall said that it had to be accepted that it was no longer sustainable to put rubbish into landfill if we wanted to look after our planet.
PCC’s Cabinet Member for the Environment and Welsh Language, Clr. Cris Tomos said he was passionate about the scheme and looking forward to its launch.
“I’ve been to many community meetings and have been heartened to speak to so many people who are keen to get on board,” he said.
“I truly feel the effort being made by people in Pembrokeshire will have a significant effect on boosting Pembrokeshire’s level of recycling and reducing the amount of stuff we throw away.
“As David Attenborough recently noted, if we are to save our natural environment we must cut our level of waste and this scheme enables our residents to do that.”
