The British Gas Help the Aged partnership and the Welsh Ambulance Service are joining forces in West Wales to help older people guard against the effects of the forecast cold snap.

New figures from the British Gas Help the Aged Partnership show that 100,000 Welsh over-60s fear their health may be at risk because their homes are not warm enough in winter.

But now the Partnership is joining forces with the Welsh Ambulance Service to combat such winter worries.

British Gas Help the Aged Partnership spokesman Iwan Rhys Roberts explained: "Cold weather can have a detrimental effect on older people's health, and as these figures reveal, this is a major concern to one in six over 60s across Wales.

"The British Gas Help the Aged Parternship has prepared the 'Your Winter Warm Up' information pack to address these concerns. The pack is full of useful information on what older people can do to make sure that they are warm and safe during the winter months.

"The packs have been widely advertised on GMTV and in the national press and proved very popular and the British Gas Help the Aged Partnership is very glad to announce that we are working with the Welsh Ambulance Service to distribute these packs directly to those people who will benefit most from receiving one."

The 'Your Winter Warm Up' packs contain a step- by-step guide to keeping your home warm, a guide to claiming benefits, top 10 tips for keeping warm during the winter months, a guide to Help the Aged services, information on home heating schemes and grants offered by British Gas and two thermometers - one for your bedroom and one for your living room.

The Welsh Ambulance Service's Patient Care Services staff will be handing out the packs to older people who travel on their vehicles across the country and also distributing the packs at day units in West Wales.

Julie Winspear, national patient care services manager for the the Welsh Ambulance Service, said: "PCS staff will have the packs available to give to patients and they are in the ideal position to be able to identify those who may be at risk in cold weather.

"They will also take the packs to day units across the area so that they are available to those who don't use ambulance transport.

"This positive initiative will provide greater access to this valuable information to more communities in West Wales. "We welcome this opportunity to work with the British Gas Help the Aged Partnership.

"The Patient Care Service plays a key role in giving older people access to rehabilitation that enables them to live independently in the community, so I am delighted that we are part of this joint initiative."
