In spite of the dire warnings from the weathermen, Saturday morning dawned misty but dry and warm for the 36 Steps2Health walkers who gathered in Penally station car park. With the walkers dividing into three groups, walks leader Barbara led the Speedies up the steep climb to the top of Giltar Head. The remains of the 1st World War practice trenches reminded us of Penally's military history. By the time we reached the top, the sun had appeared and jumpers were quickly removed. With inquisitive sheep watching our progress, we followed the coastal footpath and enjoyed the stunning views and wildlife. From Giltar Point we descended to the beach and returned via the footpath to enjoy welcome refreshments at the 'Overlander'. Cold drinks were the order of the day! Already enjoying their refreshments were the Steadies. They had set off in the opposite direction, following the footpath across the golf course to Black Rock. At this point the groups divided, with Paul and Erica leading a group onto the South Beach. The sun shone and the sea looked very inviting, but there was no stopping to cool off. Val and Janice's group turned right at Black Rock and followed the shady, peaceful footpath via Crossing Cottage before returning to the Overlander. Tomorrow (Saturday) will be a town walk. Meet at the usual place near the new Bus Station for a 10.30 start. Coffee will be at 1 Esplanade.
