Sir, The Walled Towns Friendship Circle was founded in Tenby in 1989 to provide a forum to consider the many challenges unique to these heritage sites and for the development of good practice and innovative solutions to challenges and opportunities which walled towns face. The original aims are enshrined in the constitution which was further enhanced in 1998 by the unanimous adoption of the Piran Declaration. 'Walled Towns are unique inheritances from times long passed and should be treasured, maintained and safeguarded from neglect, damage and destruction and passed on into perpetuity as irreplaceable Timestones of History'. The Italian walled town of Gradara has installed a bilingual plaque on their walls enshrining this declaration, which example has now been followed in a number of member towns. It could be most appropriate to seek planning permission for a similar plaque to be affixed beside the Five Arches, the logo of the WTFC, in conjunction with the spotlight project now under consideration. I would be proud to head a subscription list to fund the supply and installation of a bilingual plaque on the wall of the founder town.

Peter L. Osborne (hon life-president WTFC), Tenby.
