Tenby has been given honorary membership to the European Walled Towns association.
The European Walled Towns (EWT) is the international association for sustainable development of walled towns, walled cities and fortified historic towns in Europe.
The EWT (then called the Walled Towns Friendship Circle) was initially founded in Tenby in 1989, as an International Forum to promote the many mutual interests shared by walled towns in Europe, and to maintain and strengthen the historic walled towns for future generations.
Correspondence from the association’s president, Joseph Spiteri, came before members of Tenby Town Council at their meeting on Tuesday night, informing members that a proposal for the resort to be made an honorary founder town member, and given free membership, had been unanimously approved.
Commenting on the news, the Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Laurence Blackhall, said that people in the town such as Clr. Trevor Hallett and Peter Osborne deserved ‘huge credit’ for the honour.
Clr. Hallett, himself, told his colleagues that it was a ‘great pleasure’ to receive this news and that as the town walls were a very important asset to Tenby, the town would work hard to promote them the best they could.
