A new initiative promoting the health benefits of walking for the very young is being launched this month. The initiative encourages parents to take their young children with them when they go out walking. The leaflet, 'Walking with Babies and Toddlers', will be launched on Friday, September 14, at Neyland Marina, when a Steps to Health walk leader will lead a walk at 11 am. The leaflet highlights three routes suitable for families and young children in the Pembrokeshire countryside. "We know that walking, like many physical activities, has huge benefits and starting this habit at a young age gives children a positive message about living an active life," said Clr. Sian James, Pembrokeshire County Council cabinet member for health and social well-being. "It can also help parents by improving physical fitness, aiding relaxation and sleep, lifting mood and raising self-esteem, as well as experiencing the joy of the great outdoors!" The leaflet has been produced by Pembrokeshire Greenways together with the NHS in Wales and the Pembrokeshire Local Health Board. Copies can be obtained from health centres, playgroups or from health visitors. Pembrokeshire Greenways works to improve access to the Pembrokeshire countryside.
