TENBY-based Journeying have recently published an account of the first 10 years of the unique not-for-profit holiday organisation, Pilgrim Adventure, the predecessor of Journeying.
Pilgrim Adventure was founded in 1988. Its original vision was to take people off the beaten track to experience God in the wideness and intimacy of creation.
"Since then it has been a journey," says author David Gleed, in a foreword to the new booklet, Walking to an Island. "We have travelled to many of the most remote and seemingly inaccessible places of pilgrimage in the British Isles, shuddered and laughed together at some of the predicaments encountered along the way, and known the delight of discovering places where for centuries people have felt especially close to God - sacred places, places of pilgrimage."
But why 'Walking to an Island'?
"The title for the booklet was taken from the name of our 1996 pilgrim journey from Applecross on the shore of Wester Ross in the Highlands of Scotland to the magical island of Iona," explained David. "The emphasis throughout was on walking in the footsteps of the saints, most particularly two of the great Celtic saints, St. Maelrubha of Applecross and St. Columba of Iona.
"For over 20 years, Pilgrim Adventure continued to take people to places around our islands, but the advent of a new millennium, and then a new decade, encouraged the Pilgrim Adventure team to consider a new approach. It was felt that in a new world with changed priorities for many, encompassing a new pattern of economic and environmental concerns it was right to diversify, including a change of name... the name chosen was Journeying.
"We continue the spirit of Pilgrim Adventure, its ethos and its faith journey and whilst the new name takes us to new pastures, we don't forget, neither do we leave, the fields where we were created; the vision of Pilgrim Adventure will always be with us."
Copies of the complete booklet entitled are available from Journeying at £2.50, including post and packaging - cheques payable to 'Journeying'. They are also available at the Caldey Island Abbey Shop in Tenby.
