A club playing walking football for over 50s has been given a boost by local councillors.

The group, which meets at Tenby Leisure Centre on Saturday mornings, has nearly doubled its player involvement in less than a month since forming, and is now up to 15 members.

A grant application for funding came before members of Tenby Town Council at their meeting last week and was backed by members,

“As an ex-footballer, ex-rugby player, ex-everything in terms of athletics, over the last six years the health of Tenby’s residents, especially in the men aged 18 to 50, has improved dramatically thanks to events such as the Long Course Weekend, Ironman and teams like the Tenby Aces encouraging activities,” said Clr. Laurence Blackhall.

“They’ve probably done more for Tenby than the Hywel Dda Health Board have ever done!

“All things encouraging people to take part in exercise should be supported, and I look forward to joining them in a couple of years. Who knows, in 10 years time we could have the world ‘walking football’ competition held on Castle Beach sands!” he added.

Councillors agreed to donate £150 to the walking football club.
