A SMALL group of friends will be stepping out on a sponsored 22-mile walk along a stretch of the Pembrokeshire coastal path on Sunday, from Tenby South Beach to Stack Rocks, to raise funds to send a 30-year-old mother to America for treatment for her life threatening illness.

AM Angela Burns will be at the start to send the walkers off at 7.30 am.

One of the walkers, Michelle Jones, said: "Esther James, who is the young mum, has a disease call Glycogen Storage Disease Type 3. This is a liver disease, but also affects her heart. It also causes muscle wastage, and other connected problems are osteoporosis, and hip displacia and some types of cancer.

"Esther has a feeding tube directly into her stomach which allows her to be pump fed through during the night to stop her slipping into a hypo coma, due to a lack of resources in her body. She has to eat every two-three hours when awake. The way she describes it is... imagine your body, when you eat puts all the food into a cupboard, when you do anything your body opens the cupboard and removes what it needs. Esther's body doesn't have a cupboard, she cannot store food as we do.

"She is expected to be in a wheelchair full-time within the next year. If we can fund her trip to America the benefits to her life will be amazing. This is a mum who has never been able to do the normal things with her 10-year-old daughter like build a sandcastle, ride a bike. These are big dreams for Esther, but everyday occurrences for the fit and healthy."
