On Sunday, June 10, the Tenby and District Branch of Diabetes UK held what has become their annual 'Walk in the Park' around Llys-y-Fran reservoir. This was one of just three walks being staged in Wales, the others in Cardiff, and Llandudno, and was part of a national campaign being held all over Britain, to raise the much needed funds to aid research work to continue.
The Pembrokeshire walk was held on the first day of National Diabetes Week, and attracted 128 walkers travelling from as far a field as Worcestershire, Merthyr, Swansea, and Neath.
On a glorious day, with perfect walking conditions, the walkers were sent on their way by Diabetes UK Cymru representative, Mr. Joe Cuff, who was introduced by local chairman, Mr. Stuart Jones.
Hundreds of pink balloons were released to mark the start - a wonderful sight with the backdrop of the reservoir behind.
Walkers of all ages took part, from the very young through to the 'not so young', and with drink and refreshment points at various places around the reservoir, a very pleasant afternoon was enjoyed by all.
The Tenby and District Branch committee would like to thank everyone who took part, and all who have made donations, and sponsored the walkers so generously. The predicted figure is in the region of just over £4,000.
Local organiser, Mrs. Maureen Worcester, commented that it was a wonderful achievement, with an excellent turnout, as with the Foot and Mouth crisis, at one time it was very doubtful if they were going to be able to stage the walk at all, and once the go-ahead had been received, it all had to be arranged within the last few weeks. The sponsored walkers did a wonderful jot to raise so much money in so little time.
Thanks also go to the main sponsor of the event, Lloyds Pharmacy, who once again sponsored the "T' shirts, banners, etc; Safeway stores at Carmarthen and Haverfordwest for sponsoring the refreshments; local aerobics instructor Mrs. Ann Thomas from Kilgetty for providing the warm-up exercises for the walkers before the start; Morris Bros., of Tenby, and Pentlepoir School, who loaned items to aid the smooth running of the day; and Boots Chemists of Tenby, and Kilgetty and Saundersfoot Pharmacies, for providing raffle prizes.
Prizes for numbers 689, 710 and 730 are unclaimed and anyone still holding these tickets is asked to contact the organisers.
