Carmarthenshire County Council is advising residents and motorists of upcoming essential gas infrastructure works due to take place in the St. Catherine Street area of Carmarthen.

Wales & West Utilities commenced the next stage of their gas pipeline upgrades in the area on September 8, with work expected to be completed by mid-November. These works are vital to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to homes and businesses in the town for many years to come.

WWU has worked closely with Carmarthenshire County Council to coordinate traffic management and minimise disruption to local residents and road users.

To support the safe delivery of the project:

  • Water Street (North) will be closed to all traffic from October 6 for 19 days.
  • A 'No Left Turn' restriction will be in place from St. Catherine Street into Parcmaen Street between September 15 and 26. Local residents can access Parcmaen Street by approaching from the east and turning right.
  • Works at the junction of St. Catherine Street and St. Davids Street will also take place from September 8 to 19, although no restrictions are planned at this junction.

Arrangements have been made with local bus operators to re-route public and school transport services as needed during the period of disruption.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Waste and Infrastructure Services, Cllr Edward Thomas, said:“We recognise that infrastructure upgrades like this can cause short-term inconvenience, but they are absolutely essential to ensure the long-term safety and reliability of our gas network.

We thank the public for their patience and understanding while this important project is carried out, and we will continue to monitor the situation to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.”

Speaking on behalf of Wales & West Utilities, Project Manager Adam Smith said:“We have been working with the Council to plan these essential works, and signage will be used to alert motorists to the traffic management.

“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.

“Our Customer Service Team is ready to take your call if you have any questions about our work. You can contact them on freephone 0800 912 2999.”

Carmarthenshire County Council thanks residents, businesses and visitors for their patience and cooperation while these important works are carried out.
