Carew

After singing Jerusalem, respects were paid to Jean Llewellyn on the passing of her sister. The speaker for the evening was Mrs. Patricia Price, who, when arranging her equipment, left members thinking they were back in school. The talk was entitled Chemistry Garden. It was excellent, with Mrs. Price explaining the different elements to be found in the soil in our gardens with just a simple test. Following the talk, members should now have much better vegetables and flowers! A vote of thanks was given by Margaret Richards. Milton A ladies provided a refreshing cup of tea. The president, Carol Cole, then took the meeting. Secretary, Pat Arlott, read the minutes for last month and the president signed them. Pat then read the newsletter and its contents were discussed. Several members hope to attend a Global Warming evening in September when the film 'An Inconvenient Truth' will be shown. Ithwen Evans won the Group Bursary and will attend a course at Denman College at a later date. In addition to established craft and discussion groups, Narberth WI, beginning in the autumn, will be holding informal monthly meetings in Williams Court. It is hoped that these meetings will bring a 'taste of the WI' to residents who care to join in the activities. The speaker was Michael Sharrat, who gave a slide show and very interesting talk on the work of the Wales Badger Group. There were many questions for Mr. Sharrat, who joined members for tea and judged the competition for a wildlife ornament. The winner was Jane Gant. New Hedges

President Pat Davies welcomed everyone for what proved to be a 'fun' evening for the July meeting. It commenced with the singing of Jerusalem and then apologies were received, and birthday wishes extended to the birthday girls. Secretary Frances Phillips read out the report of the June meeting. All agreed they had had a splendid evening when seven members attended the Federation dinner at Llandissilio, where Jason Mohamed, BBC presenter, was the after-dinner speaker. Jason was a hoot and had everyone in fits of laughter with his off key singing, but really he had a very good voice, especially when he had everyone singing 'Delilah' with him. The meal and the company were excellent. Eight members had gone on the treasure hunt and had enjoyed this. Important notice: New Hedges WI will be responsible for the tombola stall on August 2 for the Fun Day. Would any member with an item for the stall contact Jean Williams, telephone 844408. Pat then introduced Doreen Hamersley with her sidekick Pauline Allen, as demonstrators for the evening. Pauline and Doreen were going to attempt to teach members folk dancing. They soon had everyone up on their feet 'having a go' and, amid lots of laughter and fun, all had a splendid time. After their exertions they were glad of the welcome cup of tea. Josie Brown thanked Doreen and Pauline on their behalf. Winifred Hewlings won the raffle. The competition for a hand-made card was won by Barbara Poole, with Ann Badham second. There won't be another meeting until September, so members ended another excellent evening by wishing each other happy holiday. St. Issell's

Following the singing of Jerusalem, president, Mary Lawrence, welcomed members of St. Issell's WI to the July meeting. Shirley Will was thanked for the flowers for the top table, and birthday wishes went to Betty Rowe for July, and Diane Rigden and Joan Parry for August. Diane was also congratulated on the arrival of another grandson. Gwyneth Jenkins expressed thanks on behalf of members to Mary Lawrence and Sheila Spiller for the beautiful flower arrangement at the St. Issell's Flower Festival. Members were pleased to hear that Mary Cavell was making good progress, and thank you cards were received from Madelene Brace and Shirley Cunningham. Everyone had enjoyed the mystery trip on July 3, finishing with a delicious meal at Plas Hyfryd, Narberth, and Mary Howells was thanked for arranging this. Those members who had joined Narberth WI had enjoyed a second meal at Plas Hyfryd on July 10. The record of the June meeting was read by the secretary, Jean Roberts, and treasurer, Joy Nixon, gave the financial report which confirmed that the calendars had been ordered. The county letter was read, those members who had attended the Federation dinner at Nant-y-Ffin and the treasure hunt had enjoyed the events, and Sue Harris agreed to take part in the Flower Festival in September at Haverfordwest. The possibility of a barbecue with Milford Haven WI was discussed, but it was eventually decided to invite them to join with St. Issell's at their Harvest Supper in September. The speaker for the evening was Nicky Bosworth, who gave a talk on genealogy. She showed members how to start tracing their family history, and demonstrated how she had researched and traced a Haverfordwest family back seven generations. She was thanked by Joyce Ludlow, who said she felt many members would be searching county records and the internet. The competition for an old family photograph had attracted several entries, the winner being Brenda Harris. This month's three raffle prizes went to Jean Roberts, Brenda Harris and Eva Rich. The meeting closed at 9.30, with Mary wishing everyone a good summer. The next meeting is on Thursday, September 13, and new members are always welcome.

Lamphey

Mrs. Joan Elliott presided at the July meeting and gave a warm welcome to Mr. Hugh Davies, a past pupil of Haverfordwest Grammar School, who now resides in Derbyshire. The talk, the Enigma Code and Bletchley Park, was very interesting and informative, with slides showing how things progressed and how the first computer came into being. The park is now a museum and well worth a visit, with the grounds well laid out. School parties and visitors are keeping it viable. The competition for a wild flower arrangement was won by Elizabeth Minchin. A talk on photography by Mr. Roy Peters will be given on September 4, when the competition will be for a photo of a local scene.

Penally

The annual outing this year was to Picton Castle. Soon after arrival, the members enjoyed a guided tour of the castle. They were told the history of the castle from the 13th century onwards. In all the rooms were very fine antiques and paintings and downstairs the collection of things to be used in the kitchen was most interesting to see. After lunch in Maria's Mediterranean restaurant, there was time to explore the woodland gardens, the fine walled garden and also the Picton art gallery. Everyone agreed that it had been a most enjoyable day.

Saundersfoot   The July meeting was held in the Sun Lounge at the Regency Hall. Jean Picton, president, welcomed members. After singing Jerusalem, apologies for absence were noted. As the group was fortunate enough to have two speakers, the usual pleasantries and business matters were dealt with quickly and Samantha Attwell was welcomed.  Samantha, from the Saundersfoot Girl Guides, had been chosen to be a representative at an International Girl Guides camp held in Arden, Warwickshire, earlier this year. As well as hearing about the experience, members were able to see pictures and articles which she had brought along. Gwen Newberry thanked Samantha for her really interesting contribution to the afternoon. The second speaker for the afternoon was Penny Brickle. Penny is a manager at the Pembroke Dock branch of the Citizens Advice Bureau. She has been involved with the CAB for a number of years (initially as a volunteer advisor) and spoke about the many services offered by the organisation. As her branch also covers Pembroke, Tenby and Kilgetty, volunteer advisors are badly needed to meet increasing demands. Jenny Archer thanked Penny for her talk and for her work with such an important service. During the refreshment break, the July newsletter was reviewed. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 18, at 2 pm, in the Sun Lounge at the Regency Hall. Ann Revie will talk about Life Within The Tower of London. The competition is any item of London memorabilia. New members are always welcome. For further details ring (01834) 810070.   Lawrenny and Martletwy

Mrs. Fitzgerald was thanked by Mrs. Davies, of Templeton WI, on behalf of all members present. The next meeting will take place on September 4.

Templeton

During June, Mrs. Sylvia Watkins attended the annual general meeting at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The annual outing was a visit to Hilton Court Garden Centre, including afternoon tea.
