Following the success of the first Voyage of a Lifetime scheme in 2008, Milford Haven Port Authority (MHPA) is pleased to open applications for 2009.
Working with the Tall Ships (Wales) Trust, Tall Ships Youth Trust, the Jubilee Sailing Trust and Milford Haven based vessels, Svanskar and Keewyadin, MHPA have expanded their scheme to offer more Pembrokeshire residents the opportunity to embark upon a life-changing experience.
Milford Haven Port Authority is looking for people who can convince them that they could either benefit from, or contribute to this sort of experience. There are several voyage experiences available, with eligibility as follows:
Voyage Experience 1 - self application/nomination: Open to physically disabled persons or willing to 'buddy' a physically disabled person. There is no upper age limit, but applications are subject to medical assessment.
Voyage Experience 2 - nomination only: For 16 to 25-year-olds who have a sense of adventure. Please put forward young people who do a lot for their community.
Voyage Experience 3 - nomination only: For 16 to 25-year-olds who would like to try a shorter voyage in and around the Haven Waterway. For those who have made it through a difficult time within the last three years. Nominations are invited from youth workers, social services and community groups.
Speaking of the benefits of the initiative, Claire Palmer, head of community development at Milford Haven Port Authority, commented: "The experience strips back barriers and perceptions and is all about working as a team. It enables you to re-assess how well you interact with other people and know yourself.
"The voyages are a great way of building or renewing confidence and developing personal and social interaction skills - a great opportunity to take a refreshed view of how individuals can work as part of a team to make a big difference."
The closing date for applications is February 28. Applicants can send in the form attached to leaflets distributed to schools, youth centres, community groups, or directly from the MHPA website http://www.mhpa.co.uk">www.mhpa.co.uk.
