West Wales 1

North Wales 0

On Sunday, a West Wales ladies representative football team, coached by Chris Griffiths and Gerry Rigby, played against North Wales ladies, at the neutral venue of Penrhyncoch, Aberystwyth.

This game was expected to be a tough challenge for the West Wales squad and so it proved to be.

It started at a fast pace, with some hard challenges especially in midfield.

It took the West Wales players a little time to become accustomed to the pace of the game, but eventually they settled down and started to play some good football.

With Sian Bennett and Molly Furnival-Doran operating in the middle of the park, they started to bring wide players Stacey John, Bethan Roberts and Emily Marchant into the game, which in turn, created numerous chances for strikers Tasha Trotman and Zoe Jones.

But for some very resolute defending from a very good North Wales defence, West Wales would have opened their account, having come close on a few occasions.

Any attacks from North Wales were dealt with by a terrific defensive display by captain Carrie Slack, Imelde Rossi, Ossie Osborne and Ellie Robinson, enabling 'keeper Leanne Jones to have a relatively easy half.

Constant pressure eventually paid off with Stacey John cooly drilling a low shot in to the far corner of the net to give the West Wales team a deserved half-time lead.

Playing against a strong wind in the second half, North Wales started strongly, but once again the West Wales defence coped well, with Leanne Jones in goal, coping well with whatever was thrown at her.

West Wales again adjusted to the situation and ended up creating some good chances that on any another day would surely have resulted in more goals.

On the evidence of this display, there is a very good team in the making for this West Wales squad, and it will be interesting to see just how far they can develop in the future.
