Vandals have struck at the public toilets on Narberth's Town Moor causing around £1,500 worth of damage.

Last Thursday night, they damaged the door of the gents section and set fire to the soap dispenser, causing smoke damage to the worktops and tiles.

Due to Pembrokeshire County Council workmen hosing down the damaged area on Friday morning, the toilets were able to remain open during last weekend.

The damage follows a recent spate of vandalism which closed public toilets on Saundersfoot Harbour for a time.

County Councillor Wynne Evans described the incident as 'totally senseless'.

"I was appalled when I inspected the damage. Eighteen months ago, a total refurbishment was carried out.

"I do, however, praise the council work team who worked so hard over last weekend to get the toilets open again."

A spokesman for Dyfed Powys Police, said: "We received a report from a member of the public on Friday at approximately 10.26 am reporting that public toilets in Narberth had been vandalised and a fire started.

"Officers have been carrying out door to door enquiries and speaking with local youths. Enquiries are currently ongoing.

"Anyone who witnessed or has any information in relation to this incident should contact PC 1168 Rory Pearce, immediately at Narberth Police Station on 101, or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111
