A county councillor has given an update on Saundersfoot’s iconic ‘lonely tree’.

As per the requirement of Mike Higgins (Tree Officer for the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority), the Monterey Cypress on Scar Rock that resides on the seaside village’s main beach, is being maintained by Saundersfoot’s Lonely Tree Preservation Society.

Back in 2021, campaigners fought to save the historic tree on the seafront, after an application to fell it was submitted to PCNPA.

Many groups and individuals came forward wanting to help save the tree, stating that together they would source the money needed to manage it.

The National Park’s development management committee, members voted to give interested parties 12 months to carry out necessary remedial work to save the 83-year-old tree.

“It was recently inspected by a tree surgeon and his advice to remove two small dead branches has been accepted,” explained Cllr Chris Williams.

“The branches will soon be removed. The tree has overlooked our fabulous beach for 90 years and I fully commend the work of the Lonely Tree group.

“The tree has stood imperious to all the recent storms and long may it continue.”
