Last week, three road shows and a large carers' event were held throughout Pembrokeshire to help identify unpaid carers.

The road shows took place in Kilgetty, St. Davids and Milford Haven, where carers were given information for support and services. Some 40 carers in Milford Haven received a Carers Week bag full of relevant information.

Following the road shows and an interview on Radio Pembrokeshire on Wednesday, around 70 carers and other professionals gathered at Haverfordwest Rugby Club to meet, hear about services and support and for one-to-one consultations.

In the morning, a carer shared her story about 13 years of caring for her daughter who is severely disabled and registered blind.

The daughter is now 13 years old and the carer (mother) has fed, washed, dressed, toileted her for those years and she wishes to carry on for another 50 years if she can.

As a carer, she also hears, speaks and walks for her daughter, as she is unable to do that herself; however, she is so lively and bubbly! All present on the day were very moved by this account.

Then they heard how Telecare (sensors and other helpful equipment) from Pembrokeshire County Council can help with caring, how the STEP project of Pembrokeshire College offers any kind of training (with added support when caring) and how Pembrokeshire County Council's head of community care sees the role of unpaid carers and the responsibility of the council.

A free lunch, therapy sessions and manual handling training for carers was provided in the afternoon.
