Tenby travelled the short distance to Bierspool to face local rivals Pembroke Dock Quins last Saturday for an important Asda Division Three West league match. Both teams were on the back of recent defeats and both were aware that a win was a must in this match. This added to the usual flavour of a derby match and ensured that the large crowd were entertained throughout the afternoon. Pembroke Dock started the stronger, playing down the slope, and managed to win much of the early possession. Good work in defence by the likes of Stuart Tyrie, Gareth Edwards, Scott Payne and the big-hitting Harry Bolton ensured that they did not break through up front. It was then that the Pembroke Dock backline began to attack from just inside their own half. Despite the efforts of Owen Thomas, Mark Heywood and Arthur Maulio-Manigto, they were able to break free down the wing, with winger Randell Watkins forcing his opposite number to knock-on. During this period of play, Tenby lost the services of their outside-half Owen Thomas, who suffered a head injury and was forced to retire from the match. Delwyn Brace replaced him at number 10. Pembroke Dock continued to attack and some weak tackling by the Tenby defence allowed the home team to advance to their 22-metre line, before giving away a penalty at the breakdown, allowing Tom Lewis to kick the three points and give his team the early lead. Lewis then stretched this lead further by scoring a breakaway try after intercepting a pass in midfield as Tenby tried to get their backline moving. He was able to canter over under the posts from some 60 metres out, despite the efforts of Will Crockford, who tried in vain to chase down the Pembroke Dock outside-half. Lewis was also successful with the conversion, giving the Dock a 10 points to nil lead. From the restart, Tenby looked to drive up field through the efforts of Sam Smith, Wyndham Williams and Stuart Tyrie. They were assisted by good work at the breakdown by Harry Bolton, Nicky Guymer and Johnny Lane, who ensured that, despite some heavy rucking from the opposition, the ball was secured for Crockford to distribute at scrum-half. Despite these efforts, the Quins managed to turn possession and provide a good platform for their backline to attack. During this attack they were able to exploit a gap in the Tenby midfield and spread the ball out wide towards their wingman. Fortunately for Tenby he was unable to secure the pass and knocked-on, to the delight of the many travelling supporters in the crowd. Tenby started to test the Dock defence as Stuart Tyrie took a quick tap penalty inside his own half, linking well with centre Mark Heywood, who fed Alex Watt, who entered the line at pace. He gained ground and offloaded to winger Randell Watkins, who advanced further up field, before being tackled well into touch by home flanker Daniel Manning. Tenby continued to work hard to gain vital possession inside the Dock half, but were unable to gain any real advantage going into half-time. The first 10 minutes of the second half saw Tenby with the advantage of playing down the slope and this saw much of their early possession wasted on attempting to kick the ball to touch in the Pembroke Dock half. If these kicks had found touch, Tenby would have been able to set up a platform at the lineout, but with many of them not finding their target, it allowed the home side to run the ball back or to return the kick through their outside-half, Lewis, who was more accurate in finding his touch. Mark Brace replaced Johnny Lane, who had worked very hard up front all afternoon, and he was soon involved in the thick of the action at the breakdown and competing for the loose ball on the floor. Tenby now looked to attack from every opportunity and this saw Wyndham Williams running the ball in his own half, before linking with his backline. Unfortunately, Tenby were penalised at the breakdown, allowing Tom Lewis the opportunity to increase his side's score. His attempt, however, failed and the score remained at 10 points to nil. The Pembroke Dock pack looked to gain field position on Tenby's 22 by driving the ball up field from a lineout. This platform then allowed their backs to continue to attack before Tenby fullback Alex Watt secured a kick over the top and called for the mark. He then ran the ball and was driven on by his pack, before Stuart Tyrie and Sam Smith carried the move on. Despite these efforts, Pembroke Dock were able to steal the ball and feed No. 10 Lewis, who sliced a drop goal attempt to the corner flag. This, however, benefited the home team as their forwards continued to drive the ball at the Tenby line and despite the efforts of the United defence, they crashed over out wide. Lewis was successful with the conversion, with a little help from one of the posts, to make it 17-0 Both teams played the next 10 minutes without a player each as Tenby's Scott Payne and the Dock's Lance Tallet were sin-binned for some fisty cuffs, as the referee had already warned both teams, due to earlier flurries of punches, that dirty play would not be tolerated. This period saw Tenby continue to kick the ball downfield in an attempt to gain territory, but again many kicks failed to reach the intended touch. Tom Lewis returned one of these failed kicks by kicking to touch from his own half to within the Tenby 22. This gave the Pembroke Dock pack an excellent platform on which to attack and they did so from a scrum five metres out. Their back row broke from the scrum in an attempt to drive over from short range, but Tenby's back row stood up to the task and kept them out. The Dock recycled the ball well and this allowed other members of their pack to snipe towards the line, but again Tenby's defence remained dogged and determined, camped on their own line. However, as Pembroke Dock continued to recycle each thrust well, they soon broke Tenby's line and crossed for an unconverted try out wide, taking the score to 22-0. After this score, Justin Richards replaced younger brother Harry Bolton, who required treatment off the field for a cut to his head. Richards secured good ball at the back of a scrum for Crockford to feed Delwyn Brace at outside-half. He then fed the ball to Mark Heywood and looped round to take the return pass, before offloading to fullback Alex Watt, who again entered the line out wide at pace. He gained ground and drew the covering defence, before passing on to winger Jimmy Davies, who ran the ball into the corner for a very well worked try. Watt was unsuccessful with the conversion from the touchline, 22-5. Tenby now seemed boosted by their score and looked to attack again from deep, with Harry Bolton returning to the fray in place of Sam Smith and Scott Payne returning from the bin. Tenby's efforts to attack continued to go unrewarded as Lewis, for the home team, continued to find touch with some excellent kicking from hand and keep the visitors on the back foot. The home side continued to pressure from within the Tenby half, with their backs going close to the line, only being denied by some excellent cover tackles from the likes of Randell Watkins, Mark Heywood and Harry Bolton. Going into the final 10 minutes, Mike Lewis replaced Nicky Guymer in the front row and his terrier-like qualities of nipping at the heels of the opposition were evident at the ruck situation. Tenby gained a penalty, which was kicked to touch on the home 22-metre line and gave the Seasiders an excellent attacking opportunity. Pembroke Dock, however, managed to disrupt the lineout and steal the ball and clear to almost halfway, and another good opportunity for the hard working Tenby side went begging. Pembroke Dock continued to work the ball into Tenby territory as Lewis found touch inside the Tenby 22. From here their backline again attacked in midfield and out wide, but Tenby's defence gave away nothing and stopped any further attack. The referee, however, adjudged that Tenby had strayed offside in stopping this attack and awarded a penalty on the 22 in front of the posts, which Lewis made light work of to stretch the home team's lead further and give a final score of 25 points to five. The Tenby side were visibly disappointed after the match as they had given their all once again, but came away from a match with no league points registered. Tomorrow (Saturday) sees the United entertain North Wales side Llangefni, and Tenby will be hoping that the long journey south will not help them in their preparation for this match.
